Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are introduced to individuals who have previously completed inpatient treatment. This type of program is beneficial for people who are ready to be done with residential care but still need routine support and treatment. Your treatment team will determine if a partial hospitalization program is right for you.

How Partial Hospitalization Programs Differ from Inpatient

During a partial hospitalization program, participants get to stay at home or in their own accommodations. Solution Based Treatment also offers the opportunity to stay within a sober living location. PHPs take part during the day, typically Monday-Friday for about six hours a day. It provides the same caliber of care, but it’s less intense than an inpatient treatment program.

What Takes Place in Partial Hospitalization Programs?

Through partial hospitalization programs you will still work closely with a treatment team that consists of medical doctors, nurse practitioners, therapists, and more. When participating in a PHP you will take part in some of the following programing:

  • Group and individual therapy sessions
  • Medication management
  • Holistic therapies & activities
  • Regular contact with a treatment team
  • Family involvement and therapy, if appropriate
  • Personalized treatment and aftercare plans
  • Community building to practice new skills and connect with others in recovery
  • Opportunity to continue living at home while receiving treatment

You may participate in a combination of several of these activities or only a few. Your treatment team will set you up on a path that meets your needs as they evolve – adding and taking away as needed.

Who Can Benefit from Partial Hospitalization Programs?

Partial hospitalization programs are best for people who have previously completed the detox process and inpatient treatment for addiction or mental health disorders. Ideally the inpatient treatment was just completed and there is a smooth transition into the PHP. Partial hospitalization programs are not the best option for people who are at high risk for relapse – you should be open and honest with your treatment team if you feel strong urges or cravings to relapse.

PHPs give you the opportunity to take your coping mechanisms and sobriety strategies and apply them to real life situations. Then you can go back to treatment the next day and discuss what worked and what did not.

Find The Right Addiction Treatment

Addiction treatment is a multi-phase process that starts with detox and ends with outpatient treatment – eventually moving towards sober living independently.
