For 2021, October 10th is recognized as World Mental Health Day by the World Health Organization (WHO). It will be a day to focus on and raise awareness about mental health issues worldwide and come together to support mental health initiatives.
At Solution Based Treatment, we celebrate this day as well, in our pursuit as an addiction treatment facility to provide mental health care for those struggling with a dual diagnosis. For those dealing with co-occurring mental health challenges and chemical dependence, our team is here to help. What Is World Mental Health Day?
With WHO’s campaign slogan of “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality,” World Mental Health Day for 2021 is poised to be a critical moment in time to raise mental health awareness amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pandemic significantly impacting people’s mental health, the World Mental Health Day initiative couldn’t come at a better time.
World Mental Health Day celebrated its first year back in 1992 as part of an effort put forth by the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization comprised of members from 150 different countries.
How to Celebrate World Mental Health Day
Get in on the conversation on social media using #WorldMentalHealthDay. While the day is about advocacy, it’s also about creating an opportunity to remind people about the importance of their mental health. The World Health Assembly met in May of 2021, and leaders from around the world agreed that quality mental health services needed to be a priority. As a result, the WHO’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2030 has been updated and will be shared in late September 2021 along with other materials and resources, leading up to World Mental Health Day.
People can participate in World Mental Health Day any way that they want to. At the end of the day, while raising awareness is encouraged, taking care of your own mental health is the priority. As a result, Solution Based Treatment prioritizes each client’s mental health as part of their addiction treatment and recovery.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment at Solution Based Treatment
Treating addiction and mental health concerns simultaneously is the best way to approach a dual diagnosis. Mental health challenges and addiction share similar risk factors and triggers, including stress, genetics, and trauma. People may develop a substance use disorder due to an untreated mental health condition or vice versa.
In many cases, people suffering from anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, and other mental health disorders use drugs or alcohol to feel better. Self-medicating is never the answer and can lead to an unhealthy dependence on drugs and alcohol. Becoming chemically dependent can also cause people to develop additional psychological conditions.
Symptoms of a co-occurring mental health condition can include:
- Changes in eating and sleeping habits
- Feeling hopeless
- Sadness or irritability
- Sudden stress, anxiety, or both
- Uncharacteristic mood swings
- Trouble concentrating
- Suicidal thoughts
- Isolation
