Insurance plans can be tricky to navigate, especially in times of crisis or stress. Finding a detox and rehab program that takes your insurance does not have to be difficult, the Solution Based Treatment admissions team helps set you up with a program that your insurance approves. There are four main types of insurance coverage: HMO, PPO, POS, and EPO.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

A health maintenance organization or HMO plan covers healthcare services from a pre-approved network of providers. Out of network care is typically only covered if it’s an emergency. HMOs also usually require that the covered person lives and/or works in the HMO’s service area to be covered. These types of insurance plans are less likely to be accepted by detox and rehab treatment centers that are not in your local area. But, we suggest checking with your HMO provider to see if you can get out of state treatment approved under the umbrella of emergency detox due to overdose or risk of relapse.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

Preferred provider or PPO insurance plans allow coverage for out of network treatment providers, but for a higher cost than within the established network. PPO plans are usually more expensive than other insurance policies because they offer flexibility, but it could save your life when it comes to being able to choose any detox and addiction treatment center in the country.

Point of Service (POS)

Point of service, POS, plans combine different offerings of HMO and PPO insurance policies. You have the option to choose your primary care provider and establish a network of providers, while also choosing to get treatment out of that network without it being an emergency. This means if you prefer a provider out of network you can visit them without special circumstances. With POS insurance plans, you traditionally have to receive a referral from your primary provider to an out of network clinician to get the costs covered by your insurance plan

Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)

In exclusive provider organization policies or EPOs, you are only covered when you see in-network providers. However, you do not need to establish a primary care provider. Likewise, you do not usually need a referral to see a specialist like detox and addiction programs. This makes the approval process easier when entering treatment. For EPO insurance plans, emergency care outside of the network is always covered whether it’s in network or not.
