Addiction treatment comes with multiple levels of care. Each one is meant to provide a unique type of treatment that is hyper focused on different goals. The treatment received during detox or residential rehab is going to be different from that received during partial hospitalization programs or intensive outpatient treatment. At Solution Based Treatment, each level of care is supervised by a team of medical professionals. Understanding the different levels of care available makes the addiction treatment process less intimidating.
The Detox Process
Detox is the first step in the addiction treatment process. It occurs right after a client reaches out and is admitted. Detox rids the body of toxins and drugs and alcohol so that the client can put their best foot forward for rehab and beyond.
This step should always be done under medical supervision for the best outcomes. The side effects experienced during detox can be quite dangerous, especially in the first 72 hours. Doctors can prescribe medications that make the client more comfortable and prevent life threatening side effects. Some acute withdrawal symptoms to be aware of include seizures, hallucinations, respiratory issues, and more. These symptoms can be combated with medical intervention.
The Residential Rehab Stage
After detox, the next level of care in addiction treatment is residential rehab. Detox should always be followed with medical supervision to prevent relapse that could result in overdose. After detox is completed, clients are at their most vulnerable. If they are going to relapse, it is often with pre-detox dosages – which can be fatal to their system after completely ridding their body of the substance and lowering their tolerance.
Residential rehab can last anywhere from 30 to 60 days, and in some cases it may last longer. During this phase of addiction treatment, clients will have 24/7 medical supervision with structured programming. The goal of residential treatment is to instill strategies for relapse prevention and coping mechanisms that foster sustainable recovery.
Partial Hospitalization Programs
Partial hospitalizations programs (PHPs) are an outpatient form of addiction treatment. This level of care is best for clients who have recently completed detox and residential rehab. It is a day treatment program that provides clients with support most of the week, but allows them to go home and sleep in their own home or accommodations each night.
PHPs typically last anywhere from several weeks to two months, depending on the client’s needs. During this level of care clients will receive structured support through different programming.
Different programming that may be used in partial hospitalization programs include:
- Intensive daytime treatment, typically 5-6 hours/day, 5 days/week
- Group and individual therapy sessions
- Medication management, if necessary
- Structured programming, including holistic therapies
- Regular contact with a treatment team
- Family involvement and therapy, if appropriate
- Personalized treatment and aftercare plans
- Safe and supportive environment to practice new skills and connect with others in recovery
- Opportunity to continue living at home while receiving treatment
Each person will require a different routine in PHP, and the doctors assigned to each client will determine what the best course of action is.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Intensive outpatient treatment programs provide care for people who cannot commit to a full residential schedule but still need routine support from addiction treatment professionals. Clients will attend group therapy sessions and have individual therapy sessions with an assigned therapist to create a sober network, develop coping mechanisms, and maintain sobriety. Intensive outpatient treatment programs utilize many of the same treatment modalities as inpatient rehab and partial hospitalization programs, but clients do not have to stay at the treatment facility overnight.
Follow Professional Advice
It’s important to note the first step for anyone looking to recover is detox. Without it, you cannot accomplish true recovery in a sustainable way. Once detox is complete, the medical team assigned to you or your loved one will determine how long you need residential rehab. After completing residential treatment, clients will move on to either partial hospitalization programs or intensive outpatient treatment.
