Medications Used in Alcohol Detox

There are several medications used in alcohol detox. Benzodiazepines, a kind of sedative, are commonly used to reduce the risk of seizures. Anticonvulsants are used to manage acute withdrawal symptoms and seizure activity, as well.

Other kinds of medications that may be used include:

  • Barbiturates, which treat withdrawal symptoms
  • Disulfiram, which inhibits the metabolism of alcohol in the body
  • Naltrexone, which can help decrease the urge to drink
  • Acamprosate, which helps rebalance the central nervous system

Alcohol Detox Timeline

If you or someone you know has been drinking alcohol heavily for weeks, months, or years, then you may need to go through detoxification to prevent severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

How long does it take to detox from alcohol? The alcohol detox timeline is different for everyone based on the severity of their tolerance, dependency, and addiction. Here are a few things you can expect.

  • Six hours after you stop drinking, you may begin to get mild symptoms of withdrawal. Symptoms could include nausea, insomnia, sweating, vomiting, nausea, and anxiety. Some people won’t have symptoms beyond these.
  • From 12 to 48 hours following the last time you had a drink, you may start to notice more significant issues. If you drank heavily in the past, you could get hallucinations or seizures (these symptoms are most common in acute cases and within the first two days of stopping alcohol). Going through withdrawal symptoms at the hospital or detoxification clinic will help prevent and manage these symptoms.
  • Two to three days after your last drink, there may be a risk of delirium tremens (DTs). DTs causes hallucinations, delusions, confusion, a racing heart, high blood pressure, and fever. In rare cases, DTs can be fatal. Fortunately, these symptoms are rare and occur in only around 5% of those with alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal usually peak within 72 hours and will begin to abate after that.

In the Event of Emergency from Alcohol Withdrawal (CALL 911)

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can become life-threatening and must be taken seriously. Most people will go through alcohol withdrawal without significant negative effects. However, those who develop delirium tremens or who have intense vomiting or other symptoms may need medical support right away.

If someone who is going through alcohol withdrawal becomes unresponsive, has an irregular heartbeat, is agitated or violent, has seizures, stops breathing, or has other serious signs of illness, call 911 immediately.

Coverage for Alcohol Detox

Alcohol detoxification may be covered by your normal insurance coverage, which gives you an opportunity to choose a provider to work with to prevent and manage withdrawal symptoms.

Residential Treatment for Alcohol Addiction

Residential treatment for alcohol addiction typically follows detoxification. Residential treatment includes 30, 60, or 90 days of around-the-clock care and monitoring.

Intensive Outpatient Programs for Alcohol Addiction

As you’re learning more about how to detox from alcohol, you may come across intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Intensive outpatient programs don’t require you to live inside a facility or receive 24-hour care. However, you will need to attend the program for a few hours at a time for several days a week.

Partial Hospitalization Programs for Alcohol Addiction

These programs are beneficial because they work like hospitalization during the day but allow you to return to your home at night. You may be able to go through detox and start rehabilitation in this kind of program.
